BRIGITTE CALLS ME BABY snuck into just under the wire with this lovely 5-song EP that’s a long overdue contender to the long-empty throne of MORRISSEY, RICHARD BUTLER and even ROY ORBISON. every song on this EP’s a banger torch song that’ll have you tearing open your shirt and throwing flowers running down the sand. lavish, lovely highs and lows are threaded throughout it, with fantastic guitar work that call back to stephen street’s work on Bona Drag. yes, that’s another morrissey reference, because BRIGITTE CALLS ME BABY are very clearly claiming his early sound as their own, and gods love them for it.
there are other influences here, notably, more than a few orbison-esque warbles on the single “Impressively Average”, and even a little MARTY ROBBINS gunfighter music on “Eddie My Love”. they seem well-represented by both their label (ATO, which is, inexplicably, owned by dave matthews), booking agencies and social media managers, which often means there’s a 50/50 chance they’re a flash in the pan we’ll never hear from again, but i hope for the upside of that coin flip, because this EP’s fantastic and i’d love to see a resurgance of big voice, big heart torch songs like this.
